Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
