The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will always live a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.
During his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a famous family.
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his previous Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
