The England midfielder Needs to Drop the Petulance to Reclaim a Key Position With Coach Tuchel.

For Bellingham to hopes to force his way into the English best team, it would be smart to cut out the unnecessary reactions. His reaction upon realizing that his number was going up following a night of uneven play in Tirana fell short of expectations.

"I prefer not to overstate it but I stick to my words 'attitude matters' and respect for the teammates who enter the game," commented the coach. "Decisions are made and you need to comply being a professional."

There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for a tantrum. Kane had just put the Three Lions leading by two in a meaningless match, there were six minutes left and he, following an inconsistent display, was just shown a yellow for fouling an opponent. It was not a questionable change. In fact it would have been unwise for the manager to keep Bellingham on the pitch given that it was possible he would make himself ineligible of the first match of the World Cup by receiving a second yellow card.

Shifting Focus to Himself

Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. It was impossible to miss the player's disappointment as he realized that he would be substituted for another player. He threw his arms up and while he exchanged a handshake after making his way to the sideline it was clear that the head coach was displeased.

Here lies the test for Bellingham. He praised Rashford for providing the assist for the captain to nod home the team's second, but his other actions was self-defeating. It is not as if protesting was going to change Tuchel’s mind. The German has repeatedly emphasized honoring the team structure and the necessity of showing proper conduct.

Facing Examination

He, left out of the previous squad, has been under scrutiny upon his return to the team this month. Practically he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to coming off the pitch as the national team rounded off a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a feisty challenge from the Albanian team.

Tactics and Formation

It means opinions are divided on whether England function at their best including Bellingham. The evidence here was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager early on. He has provided the squad organization and direction lately, using a No 6, a box-to-box player, a No 10 and specialist wingers, but it felt different against Albania. Jarell Quansah was handed his international debut, the midfielder was in the starting lineup internationally and the role of John Stones as an auxiliary midfielder gave a faint echo to the Manchester club's 2023 treble winners.

Inconsistent Display

Bellingham had ups and downs. He set up a shot for Eberechi Eze in the latter period but often looked overly eager to shine. There were a lot of rushed, misplaced passes. There was a needless bit of aggro against an opponent in the early stages. The team looked disjointed after halftime. One Albania chance followed he lost the ball cheaply. His caution came after he was dispossessed from Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.

Depth Makes the Difference

In the end the bench quality proved crucial. The coach brought on Foden, who appeared more naturally fitted to the spot in which Bellingham operated earlier in the match, and Bukayo Saka. Eventually Saka whipped in a set-piece for the captain to open the scoring. This served as a reminder that corners and free-kicks will play a key role next summer.

Connection Remains

Still, though, all talk was about Bellingham. The brilliance of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was a little lost due to the fuss of the player change. When the match concluded, the focus was on the midfielder. Tuchel walked up behind him and pushed the player towards the English fans. The bond between them is not damaged. Tuchel is not willing to give up on Bellingham yet. Yet whether the coach is prepared to grant him centre stage remains in doubt.
