Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories After Recent Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat put up 86 first-half points against the Grizzlies

The Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first NBA match since player Rozier was detained for suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a sweeping federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 first-half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37-year existence.

Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also won their initial match after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the team to a decisive 139 to 119 win over the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further said an league probe into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.

"Moreover 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Rozier.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
