Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
