Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's remarkable comeback win over the Giants. Payton remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
  • The team went 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
