Three police officers perished and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the property near Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location revealed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the blast had occurred on a level above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the propane tanks being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
