Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
Summers stated in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the promise of the organization, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who once led Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released messages revealed that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it respected his decision to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the directors," the organization stated.
This development arrives after the entire Congress of Congress decided on this week to endorse a legislation that would compel the US justice department to disclose its records on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the office of President Trump for signature. The President has said he intends to approve the legislation, after reversing his view on the issue following pressure from his base.
A collection of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the Congressional committee recently referenced several high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The emails revealed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the academic to notable international personalities.
After the emails were made available with the public, the former official expressed he took "full responsibility for my misguided choice to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to restore confidence and repair relationships with the persons nearest to me".
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over the university from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties previously on this week, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in Washington where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
He became part of the board of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
