Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
